7.3 Magnitude Strikes New Guinea

An earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale hit Papua New Guinea today, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The tremor struck at a depth of 71.5 miles (115.1km), about 137 miles (221km) north-northwest of the capital Port Moresby at 3:05pm local time.

Witnesses in Port Moresby told AFP that people came running out of buildings, power lines swayed and parked cars rocked.

No immediate tsunami warning was issued.

Massive but deep earthquake below Eastern Papua New Guinea - main concern: landslides

A strong but very deep earthquake happened at 03:04 PM (15:04) below eastern Papua New Guinea. The depth of the earthquake will have weakened the shaking even just above the epicenter. Our main concern are possible landslides.
