Iranian General Qasem Soleimani Is Leading The Attack Against The Iraqi City Of Tikrit

Jack Moore, Newsweek: Iranian Military Mastermind Leading Battle to Recapture Tikrit From ISIS

A notorious Iranian commander is spearheading the Iraqi offensive on the ISIS-held city of Tikrit, providing tactical expertise and a key link to Tehran for supplies to the Iraqi militias advancing on the terror group’s territory.

This week, a combination of 30,000 Iraqi security forces, Sunni and Shia militiamen launched a campaign to retake the Sunni-majority city, the hometown of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, from the terror group after it swept through northern Iraq last summer. Iraqi security forces, backed by the majority-Shia Popular Mobilisation Units (PMU), are advancing on the city from three directions, north, east and south, where the main entry points into and out of the city lie.

WNU Editor: Qasem Soleimani is one of the most dangerous people in the world .... the fact that he is apparently directing this Iraqi attack on Tikrit says volumes on the role that Iran is now playing in Iraq.

Debka: Al Qods Brigades chief Gen. Soleimani seriously injured in Iraq by ISIS suicide squad

WNU Editor: Aside from a few blogs and Debka, no one else is reporting this story. Iranian news agencies have also posted nothing. If true .... this is big news. Gen. Qassem Soleimani is regarded to be one of the most influential leaders in Iran, and it is his office that is overseeing support for the Assad regime in Syria, and the involvement of Iran in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East. I am not surprised that the Islamic State would make him a high priority target .... if not their highest after Syrian President Assad. This is a breaking news story, and I will update it when more news becomes available.

WNU Editor: Hat Tip to regular reader James for giving me the lead.
