VOA: Nigerian Military Says Boko Haram 'Headquarters' Taken

The Nigerian military says soldiers have retaken the town of Gwoza, one of the last areas in northeastern Nigeria controlled by militant group Boko Haram.

The military says on Twitter that troops captured the Borno state town on Friday morning and destroyed the headquarters of Boko Haram's self-declared caliphate. It said more details would follow.

The unconfirmed report came out 24 hours before Nigerians go to the polls for presidential and parliamentary elections.

BBC: Boko Haram crisis: 'About 500' Nigeria children missing

About 500 children aged 11 and under are missing from a Nigerian town recaptured from militants, a former resident of Damasak has told the BBC.

A trader in the north-eastern town told Reuters news agency that Boko Haram fighters took the children with them when they fled.

Troops from Niger and Chad seized Damasak earlier in March, ending months of control by the Islamist militants.

A regional force has recently been helping Nigeria take on the insurgents.

VOA Exclusive: Nigeria Brings S. African, Foreign Mercenaries Into Boko Haram Fight

ABUJA, NIGERIA - South African and other foreign soldiers in Nigeria are fighting against Boko Haram, engaging in ground combat and flying combat air sorties, Nigerian soldiers told VOA Thursday.

The fighting comes as the Nigerian government tries to notch battlefield victories ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections later this month.

Nigerian government officials confirmed the presence of foreign military personnel, but said they were only advisers accompanying military equipment purchased from South Africa, Russia and Ukraine.

The armies of Chad and Niger have launched a joint offensive against the Nigeria-based Islamist group Boko Haram.

Military sources said Chadian and Nigerian forces began the offensive Sunday morning in Nigeria's northeastern Borno state.

The two nations join Cameroon and Nigerian in the fight against the group that recently pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.

CNN: Boko Haram purportedly pledges allegiance to ISIS

(CNN)Boko Haram, the Nigeria-based Islamist terror group, has pledged allegiance to ISIS, according to an audio message purported to be from Boko Haram's leader, Abubakar Shekau.

In the audio, which was posted online Saturday, the speaker says Boko Haram is announcing its "allegiance to the Caliph of the Muslims, Ibrahim ibn Awad ibn Ibrahim al-Husseini al-Qurashi," which is another name for ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

CNN has not been able to independently authenticate the message.

N'DJAMENA (Reuters) - The United States military will provide communications equipment and intelligence to help African nations in the fight against Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram, the commander of U.S. Special Forces operations in Africa said.

West African military commanders have long complained that cross-border operations against Islamist groups, from al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in Mali to Boko Haram in Nigeria, have been obstructed by lack of compatible communications equipment, making it hard to swap information and coordinate.
