BBC: Deadly bomb attacks hit Egypt's Sinai peninsula

Bomb attacks targeting the police and army in Egypt's restive Sinai peninsula have killed two people and wounded more than 30, officials say.

A suicide bomber targeted a police compound in the city of El-Arish, leaving a civilian driver dead.

A roadside bomb later exploded beside an armoured vehicle, killing a soldier.

Sinai Province, a jihadist group affiliated to Islamic State, claimed it was behind the first attack, the al-Yawm al-Sabaa newspaper reported.

Militants based in the Sinai have killed hundreds of soldiers and police since the military overthrew Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013.

Egypt's War Against Militants In The Sinai Is Intensifying

Reuters: Dozens of suspected militants killed in Egypt’s North Sinai: sources

Egypt’s military killed dozens of suspected Islamist militants in an operation in Sinai, security sources said on Wednesday, while state media reported the kidnapping of a businessman in the region.

Apache helicopter gunships killed 18 suspected militants after they destroyed four vans in North Sinai, security sources in the remote but strategic region said.

Twenty were killed when the military bombed a residence, a school and a youth center where the suspected militants were gathering near the North Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid, the sources said. Twenty-eight militants were wounded, they said. Another security source in Cairo said the military launched an operation in North Sinai that had left "scores" dead.

A group calling itself "Defenders of Jerusalem" is throwing its lot in with ISIS, making the battle between Cairo and Islamists ever more since the army ousted the Muslim Brotherhood.

CAIRO — Muneim (not his real name) remembers every detail of the encounter: the frightening masks; the uniforms as dark as night; the Kalashnikov rifles slung over their shoulders.

The North Sinai trader was on the road from Arish to Sheikh Zowead two months ago when he suddenly found himself face-to-face with a group of armed men. "They had their black flag with God's name on it," he recalled. "They ordered me to stop the car for a search. They finally let me go.."

Speaking softly in in a Cairo café, Muneim admits it was a close call. "A few days later an employee of the local governor's office was shot in the head on the same road," he said. "The army won't even go there.'
