Sweden Confirms Submarine Presence -- Voice of America

Sweden says it can confirm a submarine violated its territorial waters near Stockholm in October.

“There is no doubt, we have excluded all other explanations. Swedish territory has been seriously and unacceptably violated by a foreign power,” said Supreme Commander Sverker Göranson in a statement.

The statement did not disclose the nationality of the submarine, but it is widely believed to have been Russian, a theory that was fueled by local news reports that Swedish military intelligence intercepted radio signals off the coast of Sweden to Kaliningrad, home to much of Russia's Baltic fleet, and that they were transmitted on a special emergency frequency.

Russia denied one of its vessels was involved.

Swedish military has called off the search for a 'Russian underwater vessel' thought to have been lurking in the Stockholm archipelago, after admitting that it was 'definitely not' a submarine.

Navy top brass has today been forced to concede that although 'underwater activity' is confirmed, the military has ruled out the possibility that it could have been a Russian sub.

This comes after Moscow blasted the hunt as 'groundless actions by the Swedish military, based on a Cold War-rhetoric'.

It's been five days since a suspected Russian submarine was first spotted in Stockholm's archipelago, a violation of Sweden's sovereignty ostensibly confirmed through subsequent sightings and a possible Swedish-intercepted Russian-language transmission through an emergency-radio frequency.

But as Elias Groll explains at Foreign Policy, the Swedish military is at a bit of a disadvantage in locating the vessel. It sold off its last sub-tracking helicopters in 2008. And the search area is spread out over "a dense island grouping, with myriad places for a submarine to hide," Groll writes.

Sweden Has More Sightings Amid Russian Submarine Speculation -- Bloomberg Businessweek

Sweden’s Armed Forces received reports of two further sightings as it continued to search for foreign vessels in waters near Stockholm amid media speculation a damaged Russian submarine was seeking to evade capture.

The most recent sightings bring the total to five as the army searches both on water and land “for something or someone,” Rear Admiral Anders Grenstad, the deputy chief of operations at the Swedish Armed Forces, said today at a press conference in Stockholm. While the army can’t confirm an intrusion, it is “very likely” that such an event took place, he said. The events are “completely unacceptable,” he said.

Commenting on the search, Grenstad said “it’s like Jesus - - everyone knows who he is but noone has seen him.” The army has moved its operation into open water, which is an easier area to search than within the archipelago, said Grenstad.

Sweden's prime minister pledged to increase spending on defence in Thursday's budget as the Nordic country's search for a foreign submarine entered a fifth day.

Sweden's new centre-left government has been placed in an awkward situation by the chase for the submarine – presumed to be Russian – as it is firmly against Nato membership and wants to focus more on co-operation with the UN rather than partnership with the western military alliance.

But, on a visit on Tuesday to Estonia, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven said: "We need to increase our capacity, meaning that we need to put more resources into defence."

Sweden currently spends about 1.2 per cent of GDP on defence.

Sweden Widens 'Mystery Sub' Hunt Off Stockholm Waters -- BBC

The Swedish navy has widened its search in the waters off Stockholm amid suspicions that a Russian submarine might be in trouble there.

The military has asked civilian vessels to evacuate the area between Nattaro island and Danzinger Gatt.

A Swedish source told the BBC an underwater vessel was spotted in waters about 25km (16 miles) from Stockholm.

Russia's defence ministry denied any "irregular situation" involving its ships.

It said a Dutch submarine might have triggered Sweden's alert after carrying out exercises in the area.

However, this theory has been dismissed by the Dutch defence ministry.

"It was definitely not a Dutch submarine," a ministry spokeswoman in The Hague told the BBC.

Sweden's Military Investigates 'Suspicious Underwater Activity' -- Reuters

(Reuters) - Sweden's military said on Friday it was searching an area of the sea around the Stockholm archipelago after a report on "suspicious underwater activity".

The search in the Baltic Sea evokes memories in Sweden of the stranding in 1981 of the Soviet submarine U137 deep inside Swedish waters, which sparked intense suspicion about the scale and motives of such incursions.

"The Armed Forces have on Friday received information about alien underwater activity in the Stockholm archipelago," the military said in a statement on Friday.
