International Diplomats Evacuate Libya as Violence Escalates -- US News and World Report
French, British and American diplomats are among a growing number withdrawing from a tumultuous Libya.
At least 30 people were killed Tuesday when Libyan militants swarmed a government military base in Benghazi, according to reports. The escalating violence in the region has driven scores of international diplomats out of Libya.
Libyan special forces fled from a Benghazi military station as militants overwhelmed them with rocketfire, according to Reuters. A special forces spokesperson told the news agency militants have since assumed control of the military camp.
Benghazi has been at the epicenter of an ongoing two-week conflict between Libyan special forces and rebel fighters supported by Islamist militant group Ansar al-Sharia. The groups were linked to the 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, according to The New York Times.
