Mass Animal Deaths Still Unexplained: Now Large Animals

This story isn't receiving nearly enough attention, and it isn't showing any signs of abating any time soon. Since the last update on this blog, there have been a number of other reports; it may be a good time for an overview and an update.

FISH:

Chesapeake Bay
Brazil
Canada
Philippines
U.K. (crabs)
Haiti
Australia
New Zealand
Canada (crabs)

BIRDS:

Italy
Sweden
Arkansas
Alabama
Kentucky
Louisiana
North Carolina
Texas

Of course all of the above are met with "explanations" - some reasonable and some ridiculous. From fireworks, to cold weather, to lightening, or even explaining that birds all hit trucks on the highway in mass - there seems to be an explanation for all of these occurrences. These "explanations" fail in answering the obvious question as to why this is occurring around the world in unprecedented numbers and in vastly different species. Not to mention why all of these so-called "natural occurrences" are all happening at the same time around the world.

Now we see "mysterious deaths" occurring in cows and seals:

Wisconsin farmer shocked to discover 200 dead cows; officials think cattle had deadly virus

First it was birds in Arkansas. Then it was fish in Maryland. And now authorities are trying to figure out what killed 200 cows in a pasture in Stockton, Wisc.

The owner of the cattle told sheriff's deputies he suspects the cows died from a virus – most likely IBR (infectious bovine rhinotracheitis) or BVD (bovine virus diarrhea), which can cause respiratory and reproductive problems, the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune reported.

Note the key words "he suspects" the cows died from a virus, and that may turn out to be the case, but at this point the underlying cause is unknown.

Samples of the dead animals were sent to Madison to be tested...

The death of the cows is just the latest in mass animal deaths in the US.

Last week, an estimated 300 birds were found out the side of a highway in Alabama. Experts told WAAY-TV that a large vehicle, most likely a tractor trailer was responsible for the deaths.

The attention to large-scale animal deaths began on New Year's Eve when thousands of black birds fell from the sky in Arkansas, prompting speculation about everything from mass poisoning to a sign of the apocalypse.

And now seals?

Hundreds of dead seals in Labrador

People on the north coast of Labrador say scores of dead seals have been washing ashore since early December.

A conservation officer with the area's Inuit government estimated late last week that hundreds of adult and young seals have died in the area between Hopedale and Makkovik this winter.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is testing the carcasses, but Nunatsiavut conservation officer Ian Winters said many people in the area believe DFO hasn't acted quickly enough.

Perhaps each of these "incidents" of massive deaths is explained by natural phenomena. Its possible. But in the 5 decades I have been wandering this planet, I sure haven't seen anything like this - especially given the massive, world-wide scale that is being reported.

One somewhat reasonable explanation involves the shifting magnetic poles, and there are updates on this situation:

North Magnetic Pole Moving Due to Core Flux

Earth's north magnetic pole is racing toward Russia at almost 40 miles (64 kilometers) a year due to magnetic changes in the planet's core, new research says.

The core is too deep for scientists to directly detect its magnetic field. But researchers can infer the field's movements by tracking how Earth's magnetic field has been changing at the surface and in space.

Now, newly analyzed data suggest that there's a region of rapidly changing magnetism on the core's surface, possibly being created by a mysterious "plume" of magnetism arising from deeper in the core.

Geologists think Earth has a magnetic field because the core is made up of a solid iron center surrounded by rapidly spinning liquid metal. This creates a "dynamo" that drives our magnetic field.

Earth's magnetic pole shift (disclaimer: I'm not a huge fan of this site, mainly for medical reasons, but occasionally it has interesting information.)

Now we see the various conspiracy theories popping up, most of which have focused on HAARP:

Who knows what this is all about. In this day and age, almost anything seems possible. I still believe that the shifting magnetic poles make for the most plausible explanation, but that idea is based on very little knowledge and a desire to seek the most "grounded" explanation.

For now, we know that these mysterious deaths are continuing. We also know that the explanations offered thus far seem weak and contrived and do not account for the varying geographical locations or the fact that widely different species (birds, crabs, fish, and now large animals such as cows and seals) are involved.

Its a mystery. As with many things in these last days, we may not be around when the explanation finally comes out. But for now, this is a fascinating story that should be followed closely. Its too big to ignore.
