Should We Be Scared Of Artificial Intelligence And Terminators?

Why Elon Musk Is Scared Of Artificial Intelligence — And Terminators -- Justin Moyer, Washington Post

Elon Musk — the futurist behind PayPal, Tesla and SpaceX — has been caught criticizing artificial intelligence again.

“The risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five year timeframe,” Musk wrote in a comment since deleted from the Web site Edge.org, but confirmed to Re/Code by his representatives. “10 years at most.”

The very future of Earth, Musk said, was at risk.

“The leading AI companies have taken great steps to ensure safety,” he wrote. “The recognize the danger, but believe that they can shape and control the digital superintelligences and prevent bad ones from escaping into the Internet. That remains to be seen.”

Musk seemed to sense that these comments might seem a little weird coming from a Fortune 1000 chief executive officer.

My Comment: I still have an open mind on this .... but Elon Musk is clearly worried.

The Day Is Fast Approaching When Robots And Software Decides Who Gets Killed And Who Does Not On The Battlefield

Fearing Bombs That Can Pick Whom to Kill -- New York Times

On a bright fall day last year off the coast of Southern California, an Air Force B-1 bomber launched an experimental missile that may herald the future of warfare.

Initially, pilots aboard the plane directed the missile, but halfway to its destination, it severed communication with its operators. Alone, without human oversight, the missile decided which of three ships to attack, dropping to just above the sea surface and striking a 260-foot unmanned freighter.

Warfare is increasingly guided by software. Today, armed drones can be operated by remote pilots peering into video screens thousands of miles from the battlefield. But now, some scientists say, arms makers have crossed into troubling territory: They are developing weapons that rely on artificial intelligence, not human instruction, to decide what to target and whom to kill.

My Comment: This is the new arms race.

Will Future Fighter Jets Be Flown By ROBOTS? Pentagon Plans To Have Artificially Intelligent Pilots In Its Next-Generation Aircraft -- Daily Mail

The Pentagon in Virginia is planning to introduce artificial intelligence to a future generation of fighter jets
The plan is to use AI as co-pilots to humans and to help with sensory data and possibly with landings on aircraft carriers
Such technology may be used in the US Navy's upcoming F/A-XX jet
And it may also feature in the US Air Force's F-X fighter jet
Both are being designed to enter operation by 2030 at the earliest

Who will be flying the military aircraft of tomorrow? According to the Pentagon, it may partially fall in the hands of artificial intelligence (AI).

Reports say that both the US Navy and Air Force are planning next-generation fighters that don't have just a human pilot.

Future fighter jets may have an AI co-pilot on board that can help with sensory data in addition to autonomously landing the plane on an aircraft carrier.

My Comment: Another development in science where practical applications are still far away in the future .... but it is still an indication on where military planners want to go.
